Fundamental Concept

What Does the "P" in P1, P2, P3, P10 Actually Mean?

In digital outdoor (DOOH) and indoor LED displays, the letter "P" stands for Pixel Pitch. Pixel pitch is the center-to-center physical distance measured strictly in millimeters (mm) between two adjacent LED diode clusters (pixels).

Small Number = Fine Pitch (e.g. P1.5, P2.5)

A smaller number means the LED diodes are packed very tightly together. This produces ultra-high pixel density, smooth curves, and crystal-clear text that looks seamless even when standing 1 to 2 meters away. However, fine-pitch displays require more LEDs per square foot, making them significantly more expensive and generally lower in brightness (suited for indoor malls or studios).

Large Number = Wide Pitch (e.g. P6, P8, P10)

A larger number means the LED diodes are spaced further apart (e.g. 10mm between dots on a P10 screen). While you would see individual dots if you stood right in front of the screen, from 15 to 50 meters away your eyes naturally fuse them into a seamless image. Crucially, wider pitch allows larger, much brighter diodes (7,500+ nits) that punch through direct sunlight and heavy rain at a fraction of the cost.

The Industry Standard Rule

The Golden Formula for Viewing Distance

How do you calculate which pixel pitch is right for your site? Broadcast and outdoor engineers use two mathematical rules of thumb:

Rule 1: Minimum Viewing Distance (MVD)
MVD (meters) = Pixel Pitch (mm) × 1.0

Example: On a P5 screen, the minimum viewing distance is 5 meters. Closer than 5 meters, you will begin to notice pixel dots. Beyond 5 meters, the image appears continuous.

Rule 2: Optimal Viewing Distance (OVD)
OVD (meters) = Pixel Pitch (mm) × 2.0 to 2.5

Example: On a P10 highway screen, optimal comfortable viewing is from 20 to 25 meters. At this distance, the image has full HD visual impact without any eye strain.

Common Buyer Mistake: Paying for Low Pitch on High-Speed HighwaysMany first-time advertisers mistakenly request a P2.5 or P3 screen for a high-speed highway like Western Express Highway or Ghodbunder Road, believing "smaller pitch is always better." This is a colossal waste of budget! On a highway, vehicles are moving at 50–80 km/h and drivers are 25 to 80 meters away. At that distance, human 20/20 vision physically cannot resolve the difference between P3 and P10. Furthermore, delicate indoor-grade P2/P3 panels only produce 1,000–2,500 nits and get washed out completely in Mumbai's direct noon sun, whereas a rugged outdoor P8 or P10 generates 8,000+ nits with full monsoon IP65 waterproofing!
